One of the hardest fighting fish you
can catch in Britain:
the Barbel is normally found in fast
flowing rivers where its streamlined
body helps it to hug the river bed,
although in recent years it has
become more widely stocked into
lakes and reservoirs, sometimes
controversially. The Barbel is a
slender, silver coloured fish that
has been given nicknames like 'the
torpedo' and 'the whippet' this is
mainly due to there relentless speed
when hooked by an angler.
They mainly feed on small insects
and water beetles, but they have
been known to eat all sorts
including smaller fish.
Barbel can be caught at any time of
day or night but early mornings seem
to see the biggest fish landed. |
