The largest member of the carp
family, originally imported from
overseas by monks, and stocked into
lakes or 'moats' as a source of
food. This was due to the distinct
lack of scales making the carp
easier to prepare for the table, as
opposed to the common carp which was
fully scaled. Mirror carp themselves
come in many different guises with
other variants including the linear
scaled carp, which has a line of
scales running along the lateral
line only.
Mirror carp are amongst the most
sought after specimen fish in the
UK, and indeed both the UK and World
carp record is held by a mirror
carp. A recent phenomena in the UK
angling world is the 'Naming' of
larger specimen carp, primarily
mirrors this is most likely due to
the individual scale patterns making
them easier to identify when it
comes to singling out a fish. |
