One of the most popular and abundant
fish in British waters, the Roach is
a small silver fish with slightly
reddish fins. It can be found in a
wide variety of canals, rivers,
lakes and reservoirs but tends to
flourish in the larger well
oxygenated waters that are rich and
fertile. There are different strains
of Roach in British waters and like
Carp, the slower growing fish tend
to live longer and therefore grow
larger although growth rates are
closely related to water temperature
and food availability.
Roach feed mainly on small insects,
larvae and algae when they are young
whilst the adults will also eat
water snails, pea mussels as well as
most of the baits anglers use. |
