Fish Encyclopaedia   -   The Wels Catfish

Fish Details Picture
British Name Catfish (Wels)
Latin Name Silurus glanis
Max Age 50 years
Max  Weight 100lb
Max Length 1.8 metres
Location Lakes, Rivers

The largest coarse fish that can be caught in Britain: the Wels Catfish is a huge predatory fish that can easily be found in large lakes and rivers right across Europe, in fact these monsters have been caught at well over 200lb in Spain, and no-one really knows just how big these fish can grow.

As the presence of their whiskers indicates, these fish are well equipped for feeding either during the night or in extremely murky water with great effect.

They mainly feed on smaller fish, but their diet can include other wild life such as frogs, snails and even ducks.

Although Catfish are primarily night feeders, they are regularly caught throughout the day at most fisheries with the best baits being fish, halibut pellet, luncheon meat, worm and boilies.

Current UK Record   (rod caught)

Due to some controversy over the stocking of overseas fish into UK waters, the official records for the species are no longer being accepted.

There have been 'reports' of British catfish caught at over 95lb.
